keep your eye on the prize

One of the hardest things to do is to stay focused on a goal. There are so many other things happening in our everyday lives to distract us. The largest of these distractions usually come in the form of people who want to take us off track. Other things that can distort our vision are circumstances beyond our control. It can manifest itself as a cold that might have you laying in bed for a few days instead of attending an event. Or a car problem that causes unexpected expenses to interrupt your budgetary plans.

When any of these things occur, it is easy to get sidetracked. It is even easier to get discouraged. Feeling as though your goal is not worthwhile is very common . Sometimes people will begin to feel as though they may never reach their goal with so many other things getting in the way. In this frame of mind not only will the goal be lost but other things will begin to back up.

The trick to staying focused on your prize is to keep your momentum going no matter what. Even if it means scaling back a little bit for a short time. If you are considering going back to school, you may have to take one class at a time. This may take longer for you to achieve your goal but the momentum is not completely lost. With each class you complete you are one step closer to your goal. Then when the opportunity arises and you can take more than one class you will accelerate your momentum.

I have said this to people before and some have laughed at the suggestion. But for those who have listened, they finished ahead of their peers who “took a break”. This is due to the fact that it is much more difficult to “back into the action” after an interruption has occurred. Scaling back keeps you focused on the prize at the end.

What is the prize you seek? Can you stay focused long enough to see it happen?
