There are a number of ways to stack the odds in your favor. You do not have to cheat, lie or misrepresent yourself or your abilities to do it either. All you need to do are a few things to improve your chances at beating the odds. Experts at business analysis have written countless articles outlining why 8 out of 10 new businesses fail. In their works they cite all the usual reasons. But what they do not report is how you can achieve success using everyday methods. These are things most people do not think about or do not want to waste their time doing.

It does not matter what it is you are looking to do. Whether you are looking to start a new career, a new business or improve your position where you are currently. Stacking the odds in your favor is very simple by using some of the following methods:

1) Educate Yourself: This does not require taking classes at the local college or university. Although if you want to do that by all means enroll right away. Invest time in yourself by reading about the new endeavor you are considering. If you discover that you need improvement in certain areas, consider joining a group that will help you achieve those skills.

2) Be Consistent- No matter how hard it seems to make a little progress, just keep trying. If it is your desire to become a painter, then paint every chance you get. Do not concern yourself with your first works of art. They may be less than perfect, but perfecting your craft will come with plenty of practice.

One of the great trumpet players of our times is Chris Botti. I attended one of his concerts on Cape Cod a couple of years ago. In order to achieve the sound that has become his trademark, he would spend countless hours in his room practicing. He talked about how many things he missed out on because he spent so much time practicing.

3) Networking- This is a big one and really KEY!! Connect with people who are already working in the industry you are considering. Really listen when you are talking to them. Listen to what they say has been their greatest failure and greatest success. That way you can avoid the pitfalls they have already endured. You may discover a way to achieve success from some pearl of wisdom they share.

4) Dip Your Feet In The Water-Find a venue that allows you to showcase your talent or business idea “Free of Charge”. Many Chamber of Commerce events or other community affairs groups host networking events that have free tables for people to display literature about the business they are in. Sometimes with a little bit of research there are also online venues that are free of charge where you can post something to promote your business.

Try some of these methods and see if they help! They are the ones I use daily!
