free time

A few years ago I discovered that I needed something to do with my free time. While it is all well and good to just “chill out”, I find that I like to make the most of all of my time.I have done the baking cookie thing when my kids were little. I made baskets for their teachers during the holiday season. I also made cookie baskets as end of the year gifts as well. At one point I turned it into a small business to see if I would enjoy doing that. What I discovered is that I LOVE to make cookies, but just not THAT much!

In the past I had tried several other hobbies to fill my “free time”. I did cake decorating. That was fun. I never really used it though. It seemed as though each time one of my kids had a birthday, some calamity would take place. I did decorate some cakes that I made just for the immediate family though. I did that for a few years before I got bored. My kids started telling me to STOP baking cakes. They had had enough already! So I did just that.

Then I experienced first hand what Breast Cancer is like. Once i got through all of the testing and the surgery, I found I wanted to do something else. For the first time in a long time, I had a new appreciation for everything that was happening in the world! I began reading all of the periodicals I had placed on hold previously. The Wall Street Journal, National Geographic, Time and Newsweek just to name a few. Before I knew it I was back in the mix. I was on top of most of the worldly events.

I made a promise to myself. I would read one book a month. Sometimes I cannot complete that task entirely. When that happens, I finish the book I am reading. Even if I discover I cannot stand it. It is part of my commitment to my “free time”. On those days when I only have a few minutes to read, I read one page here and there. That way my “free time” is not a waste of time!
