How many times have you heard people say they can do something with their eyes closed? Usually they are referring to a task or some quirky trick they know. Or it could be a job that appears so simple that it requires little or no skill at all to perform. But what if you literally could not see? What could you do then?

A man named Pete Gustin from Boston, Ma. can tell you exactly what you can achieve with limited eyesight. Pete was born with macular degeneration. He was eight when he was diagnosed. This is a medical condition that usually affects older adults. It results in the loss of vision in the center of the visual field (the macula) because of damage to the retina. It can make it difficult or impossible to read or recognize faces. There remains enough peripheral vision to permit other normal activities of daily living.

At the age of 21 he was told by a New York agent that he would NEVER make it in doing voice over’s because of his sight. But Pete did not let this dampen his dream. Over the years he has learned to have a computer giving him the script in his head phones. Then he repeats those words using his rich deep voice. He has been working at the local station here in Boston WEEI. He has also done advertisements on television as well as movie trailers. I would have to say that agent was the one with limited sight!

As for Pete, he will tell you himself in the video I have attached that anything is possible with a little imagination and a whole lot of determination. Who knows what is next for this young man? Keep your ears open. You just never know where you might be hearing his voice next!
